- This is the golden age of shortstops in wiffle ball, and Matt
is one of the best. Although overshadowed by the likes of Derek
Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Nomar Garciaparra, Matt put up comparable
numbers in 2000 as he hit 30 homers and drove in 115 runs. In
doing so, he set franchise records, surpassing some marks that
went back as far as 1932. Matt was just as stellar in the field
as he led all shortstops in total chances (755) and assists (501),
while ranking fourth in double plays (115). He made 21 errors,
but had just two in his last 49 games.
With great speed, terrific reflexes and a powerful arm, Matt is
capable of making some eye-popping plays in the field. His biggest
improvement has come at the plate, however, as he has raised his
batting average every season since reaching the majors in 1997.
